Coffee with Carlene: RISE Weekend

Oh my lanta, the questions I have received about RISE! What is it? What are you doing there? Why are you spending money on it? What will you get out of it? WHY WON'T YOU BE BLOGGING FOR THREE DAYS?! Y'all, the books can wait. I will be getting a heaping pile of new friends, refreshing my outlook on life, and bringing a flame to the candle within me that has long been dimming out.

I'll get the whiny stuff out of the way first. 2017 was a SUPER hard year for me. Yes, I started an adventure in 2016 with my wonderful, amazing man that carried on through 2017, but we went through a lot in 2017. Not only did both of our pasts try to push their way into our present, but we also survived the deadliest mass shooting by an individual in US' recent history. We survived, but we didn't escape unscathed. I have anxiety and not like the kind I had before where I could calm down, but the kind where I'm crying inconsolably and reacting to every little noise that I don't think fits the situation. *Please don't "drop the mic," as they say* I also was diagnosed with a severe gluten intolerance and by the way, my favorite comfort food for months after October 1 was grilled cheese. It just isn't the same on GF bread. These things sucked, but I'm also thankful they happened to me and not to someone who maybe couldn't have handled these things at the time. In fact, I feel that way about most of my past. There have been some ugly, terrible, would-never-wish-on-anyone times, but they made me into who I am and I think they had a purpose.

We also moved in together and started searching for that home we can grow into a family in. We went on countless adventures, I met Tarryn Fisher #PLN4LIFE, I traveled to the gorgeous state of Seattle, attended my aunt's wedding, and turned this blog into something more than just a hobby. There was so much good in 2017 that definitely outshines the bad, but in 2018...I want to own the bad. I want to own all the bad of my past and I want to own all the good and I want to turn it into something that makes ME better. We're three months into the year and it already has had it's fair share of ups and downs, things that I should be using as tools not just as rises and falls along the road called life. So, that brings us to RISE.

I am a tiny bit obsessed with Rachel Hollis. She has the cutest family, the greatest career, and knows how to hand out the advice and the words you really need to hear. Yes, she'll share with you how to make the best dip for Sunday football, but she'll also challenge you for being judgemental, for giving in, and for not pushing yourself to achieve the dreams you didn't even know you had. In fact, she wrote a book about it. That book, Girl, Wash Your Face, inspired me to do more than what I'm doing now and it made me want to go to RISE even more than I did in 2017 when it was in Austin. Then my best friend shared she was going and instead of just saying, "Carly (that's what my friends call me), I want you to go," she said "Carly, I found someone selling a ticket for less than the price it goes for on the site, I want you to go, I'll start a group chat." She's a really good friend, in case you're wondering. She took any of my pushbacks, gave me a solution, and held me accountable, so here we are, going to RISE in just 4 days. Maybe we aren't packed or know when we're leaving, but a month ago we booked our hotel room and today, today we're counting down the hours until we can be amongst the women who also have these same desires. Our reasons for going are all different, our pasts are different, our presents are different, but we share a common love for Rachel Hollis and her bubbly personality that just makes you want more for yourself too. #ChicTribe

So, what is RISE?

RISE is a two-day conference designed, curated, and produced by Rachel Hollis. Rise is a cultivated space where women from every walk of life can come together to be inspired, supported and enveloped in a community. As always, RISE weekend will be the perfect balance of loving encouragement and straight-up kicking your butt! Expect to be energized and motivated. Expect to cry and laugh and maybe drink too much wine. Expect to reconnect with those dreams and goals you’ve been carrying around for years without any idea of what to do with them. Expect to dream. Expect to be inspired. Expect to RISE.
Here's what last year looked like: https://thechicsite.com/2017/08/03/rise-austin-2017/

What am I doing there?

See above! I'm probably going to take notes, cry a lot, meet a ton of inspiring women, spend time with my best friend, shop a bit, and drink some wine! We're all there to challenge ourselves and find a way to motivate ourselves to reach for our goals, dreams, etc. I'll be listening to some incredible people speak, I mean, look at this speaker list! https://www.letsrise.co/speakers/ I'm not even going to lie, I cry just thinking about this weekend. Yes, that means I am tearing up right now.

If you've never been to a conference you're super interested in, I suggest finding one, saving for it, and making it something you do in your lifetime. Those weekends spent listening and learning change you.

Why are you spending money on it? What will you be getting out of it?

Let's just combine this one, as this post is getting long. You get out of ANYTHING what you put into it and what you want to get out of it. Seriously. I've learned that over and over probably since college. Hard work creates results. The money I'm spending on this grants me access to a room full of women who have achieved amazing things and who want to keep achieving. It grants me the time, the location, and the access to really incredible people who are going to share their lives, their lessons, their life advice. Sure, I spent extra on a hotel room and cute bookmarks with my blog info on it, but those things lead to networking, something I want to do more of. I also want to refresh my strength in myself and in the future I am building. How can I achieve anything if the fire in my heart is burnt out?

Finally, why won't you be blogging for three days?

I might read, you all have been with me for three years and you've never heard of me not reading so I admit, when we have some downtime or I need to recharge a bit, I will probably read. I'll make sure to post the book I bring along with me on my Instagram. I won't be blogging or interacting on Facebook though, no. I want to give my all to this weekend's conference, I want to spend real quality time with my friend off social media, and I want to recharge the batteries that keep me blogging day in and out, even on the days when literally no one visits the site. I have a full time career, some of you know that some of you don't, and it is 50+ hours of my time every week spent in front of the computer and/or on the phone. I'm going to take this time to also prepare for the week following, where I have a demanding career that lately has been pretty challenging. I want to succeed in that career, so even though a lot of this weekend relates to my dreams (read that: blogging, reading, writing) it also applies to my personal life, including my work and my relationships. I think you all will survive! Plus, when I get home, I promise to blog about my adventures!

I really can't wait for Friday to be here and if RISE sounds interesting to you, shoot me an email or a message on your favorite social media platform. If you have the ability to get to LA this weekend, there are still a handful of tickets left and we'd love to have you sit beside us in the theatre while we get inspired.
